Good news for the Badgers!

A surprising outcome but at least it seems a calculated one. Unusual for humans not to go the route of extermination. I'm happy about that.

Bear cub or puppy?

I was passing through Bangkok, last weekend and heard through the grapevine an intriguing story, I'm not sure if its true but I could believe it. In Bangkok there lies the biggest flea-market in S. E. Asia, Chatuchak Market. A fabulous place where you can buy almost anything. They have a huge and fascinating pet section. Of course there are many, many obscure pets and a fantastic selection of tropical and marine fish. I am told that one can buy almost any animal there, certainly pets that you could not get anywhere in Europe. I suspect of course that many would be illegal or endangered but that's Thailand's business. Anyway apparently a lady had bought a puppy without really knowing much about it or indeed the breed - lovely cuddly furry things as we all know. A few weeks later she took it to her vet complaining of it behaving strangely. Indeed it was spending an incredible amount of time trying to walk on its back legs! The vet immediately confirmed the diagnosis. She had been sold a bear cub! The beast was taken into care. She was advised to consult the vet next time but had been put off by now anyway and was probably the kind of person that had forgotten that a puppy is not just for Xmas. (Btw Buddhist's don't celebrate Xmas).

Newts

I came across a couple of newts the other day whilst on a picnic near a Scottish reservoir. I couldn't identify them and even looking on the Internet found that none of the sites I had surfed had decent photographs of the 3 British species. Anyone out there recommend a site or book that has quality pics? One of them had a thin stripey line down its spine and a bright orange belly. I know they are protected I am just curious as to which species they were.
